U.S. 1864 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin. Philadelphia Mint, no mint mark. Type I, No Motto issue designed by James B. Longacre. The obverse shows Liberty facing left with “LIBERTY” on the coronet, thirteen stars around, and the date below. The reverse shows a heraldic eagle with shield, rays and stars above, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY D.” around the rim. Desirable Civil War date.
Struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, with a standard weight of 33.40 grams and diameter of 34 mm. Reeded edge. Reported mintage was 204,235 pieces.
