United States, Philadelphia Mint. James B. Longacre design. Obverse with Liberty head facing left, wearing coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars, date 1853 below. Reverse with heraldic eagle, shield, rays and stars above, with legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / TWENTY D. This is the Type I Liberty Head Double Eagle design, issued before the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST in 1866.

PCGS lists this issue as 1853 $20, PCGS #8908. Mintage: 1,261,326. Standard specifications: 90% gold, 10% copper, 33.44 grams, .9675 troy oz. actual gold weight.

Good, visible wear consistent with average use. See photos for more condition details.  Ungraded, housed in 2x2 holder. Photographs show surface marks, light handling wear, scattered abrasions, and visible hairlines or slide marks. Details remain strong, especially on Liberty’s hair and the reverse eagle. Treat as circulated or low About Uncirculated until professionally graded. Authenticity and grade not guaranteed from photographs.
