A mixed-media collage made from the cover of a discarded book layered with leftover paint and upcycled collage pieces. The artist generously donated this piece.
Gina Johnson is a Kansas City-based mixed-media artist who creates everything from handmade journals from vintage textiles to collages on discarded book covers, all with the intention of inspiring the viewer to rethink the way we often dismiss the old and forgotten. Gina started using ‘junk’ out of necessity, as it allowed her to release fear and embrace experimentation. It didn’t take long for her to embrace the imperfections and fall in love with the inadvertent results. Now, Gina seeks out the gaudy, dated, and tired as they add depth to the storytelling within her work.
