Story Description:
The artwork depicts the ancient Egyptian Judgment of the Dead, commonly known as the Weighing of the Heart, a central belief in Egyptian funerary tradition.
In the scene, the deceased is led into the hall of judgment by Anubis, the jackal-headed deity associated with embalming and protection of the dead. The heart of the deceased is placed on a balance and weighed against the feather of Ma’at, symbolizing truth, balance, and moral order.
Nearby, Thoth, depicted with the head of an ibis, records the outcome of the judgment. Seated on a throne is Osiris, ruler of the underworld, who presides over the final verdict. Behind the scales waits Ammit, prepared to consume the heart if it is found heavier than the feather.
If the heart is balanced or lighter, the deceased is judged worthy and allowed to enter the eternal afterlife. If it is heavier, the soul is destroyed. The scene reflects ancient Egyptian beliefs that one’s moral conduct in life determined their fate after death.
