1897 Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle, Philadelphia Mint. Obverse depicts Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” with thirteen stars and date below. Reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with shield, arrows, olive branch, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN D.” around.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head $10 Eagle series was struck from 1838 to 1907; the “With Motto” Type 3 version ran from 1866 to 1907. This 1897 Philadelphia issue had a reported mintage of 1,000,090 and was struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, with a reeded edge, 26.8 mm diameter, and approximate weight of 16.7 grams.
