Ithaca, N.Y.: Mack, Andrus, & Co., Printers, 1848.
Description:
First edition of this scarce and important early account of missionary and overland travel in the American West. The work chronicles the experiences of Dr. Elijah White, U.S. sub-agent for Indian Affairs, and his wife during their residence in the Oregon Territory, with narrative detail on the Provisional Government, Native American relations, missionary work, and overland migration in the 1830s–40s. White’s account, compiled by A.J. Allen, includes rare descriptions of voyages around Cape Horn and through the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii).
Includes commentary on early Oregon laws, missionary tensions, land claims, and tribal relations—critical for understanding the social and political framework of pre-statehood Oregon.
Good for age and use. Internally complete. Staining and foxing to title and first few pages; no frontispiece present; boards worn [or describe condition]; otherwise structurally stable.
Note: Lacking frontispiece portrait. See pictures.
