1909-S Indian Head Cent. San Francisco Mint. Designed by James B. Longacre. The obverse features Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around and the date below. The reverse shows the denomination “ONE CENT” within an oak wreath, with a shield at the top and the “S” mint mark below the wreath.
This was the final year of the Indian Head cent series and the only Indian Head cent struck at the San Francisco Mint. It is also the lowest-mintage regular-issue Indian Head cent, with a reported mintage of 309,000 pieces, making it one of the key dates in the series.
Struck in bronze, with the standard composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. Standard weight is 3.11 grams, with a diameter of 19 mm and a plain edge.
