"Oscar Howe, known in Dakota as Mazuha Hokshina, was a Yanktonai Dakota artist and educator celebrated for blending traditional Dakota culture with bold modernist abstraction. His dynamic works in casein and tempera often featured bright colors, geometric forms, and fluid motion, challenging restrictive definitions of "Indian Art" and influencing acceptance of abstraction in Native art."
