Original oil on stretched canvas by the artist Henry Maidment who was active in the years 1889 to 1914. The composition of the painting features an early fall landscape with trees, a house in the distance, a shepherd and dog herding sheep along the lane, with a slightly overcast sky. This work does not have a known title but here is the appraisers descriptive title: "Shepherd with Sheep in Landscape". This piece is also signed with a conjoined monogram in the lower left: HM. The year this painting was created is unknown outside of the timeframe for when the artist was active. This lot comes with the documents from its appraisal in 2010. Henry Maidment was an English painter of landscapes, figurative, animal, and genre subjects who painted during the late 19th century and his typical work depicts country life in a natural environment. He, along with many of his peers, prospered during the late 19th century, winning many patrons from the emerging middle class. Maidment was fairly prolific and some of his paintings seem to have become formulaic towards the end of his life. Maidment exhibited at many galleries during his life and works by the artist became popular with both the private and public collectors during the late 20th century. He also worked under the pseudonyms of R. Fenson and A. Waynne and under this latter name he exhibited one painting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1897. Dimensions: 27" H x 37" W x 2" D.

Condition

Good, visible wear consistent with average age and use. The canvas is in good condition and the frame is in fair condition. Some things to note about this piece: According to the appraisal paperwork this painting had some restoration work done by Van Witt Conservation in 2009. The frame is not original to the painting, making the plaque on the frame incorrect. There are cracks in the frame lining the top and bottom edges. See photos for more condition details.
