Authentic hand-colored daguerreotype portrait of a young man, dating to the 1840s-1850s. The image shows excellent tonal depth with subtle hand-applied pigment to the face, clothing, and background which is characteristic of early portrait photography’s efforts to bring lifelike warmth to the silvered surface.
Presented in a later wood and gilt-liner frame with arched mat, replacing the original case or housing. The daguerreotype plate exhibits the soft mirror-like reflectivity typical of the process, with visible age toning and mat staining that confirm its period authenticity.
Dimensions: 16" H x 13.5" W.
Very good with minimal wear commensurate with age. Light fading to the frame gilding. See photos for more details.
