Chickering & Sons “Anniversary Grand” (S/N 127957), a 68″ (5′8″) figured-mahogany parlor grand dating to approximately 1917–1918. Serial: 124624. Figured mahogany, quartersawn ribbon grain; original warm reddish-brown finish. Three pedals. Dimensions: 36" H x 70" W x 54" D. Chickering & Sons, founded in Boston in 1823 by Jonas Chickering, is the oldest American piano manufacturer and was credited in 1843 with the one-piece cast-iron grand frame — the innovation that made the modern grand piano possible. At the time this instrument was built, Chickering was part of the American Piano Company, alongside Knabe and Mason & Hamlin. The cast-iron plate of this piano is clearly branded THE ANNIVERSARY GRAND, an attractive mid-period designation within Chickering’s grand line.

Pinblock tight; pins holding A440 — the most important structural factor on a piano this old. Hammers excellent (minimal grooving); action consistent, regulation holding, repetition functional. All three pedals working, including sostenuto. Dampers seated and timing uniform. Plate intact, clearly stamped; bass bridge intact with seated pins; felt healthy (no moth damage); no missing or broken parts. Figured mahogany case with original finish; plastic white key-tops are replacements but in perfect condition.  Strings: light rust on plain wire, copper tarnish on bass. Functional, no breaks, but tone clarity is compromised. Soundboard shows moderate water staining and a small crack; visual characteristics are consistent with primarily cosmetic impact. Minor cosmetic veneer chips on cabinet. See photos for more condition details.
