After Charles Robinson
(England, 1875-1950)
Spirit of Ecstasy
Bronze on a round marble stand. Dimensions: 21" x 6" diameter.
The Spirit of Ecstasy was first created in the early 20th century as a commission by then-director of Rolls-Royce, Claude Johnson. Custom car hood mascots were common then, and Johnson feared customers would use inappropriate ornamentation that would reflect poorly on the brand. He commissioned Robinson to create something dignified and graceful, an ornament that reflects the cars and the customers of Rolls-Royce alike. Also known as Silver Lady, Flying Lady, or Eleanor (after the woman who modeled the pose), the Spirit of Ecstasy remains the classic emblem of Rolls-Royce today.
